ECUADOR
THE NATIONAL INTELLECTUAL RIGHTS SERVICE (SENADI) IS CREATED
The National Intellectual Rights Service (SENADI) was created by means of Executive Decree No. 356 published on April 18th 2018, entity that will replace the Ecuadorian Institute of Intellectual Property (IEPI). SENADI will be the Intellectual Property Authority responsible for applying the Organic Code of Social Economy of Knowledge, Creativity and Innovation (COESCI)
SENADI is attached to the Secretariat of Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation (SENESCYT) and even though it will have similar faculties to those of its predecessor, its composition has changed in order to allow the SENESCYT’s involvement.
An important change to highlight is the election of its General Director who will be designated by the head of SENESCYT. Additionally, the equivalent of the Intellectual Property Committee of IEPI will now be known as the Collegiate Body of Intellectual Rights although its composition and faculties have remained unchanged. Its members will be designated by the General Director. Former employees of IEPI will be employed by SENADI, no staff reductions were ordered.
