CACAO AMAZONAS PERU PROTECTED AS DESIGNATION OF ORIGIN IN THE NAME OF COOPERATIVA CENTRAL DE PRODUCTORES AGRARIOS DE AMAZONAS (CEPROAA)

The Direction of Distinctive Signs of the National Institute for the Defense of Competition and the Protection of Intellectual Property (INDECOPI) granted the certification of designation of origin to CACAO AMAZONAS PERU in the name of Cooperativa Central de Productores Agrarios de Amazonas (CEPROAA), to identify a special dry fermented cacao grain known in the country as “native cacao”.

Its geographic production, extraction and processing area is limited to certain districts of the provinces of Bagua and Utcubamba of the Amazon department.

The designation of origin could benefit approximately 1,300 families who as producers may use it in order to differentiate their product from others in the market.

The registration confers a quality guarantee to the product which is associated to its inherent characteristics and will enable its sale at a higher price.

CACAO AMAZONAS PERU is the tenth protected designation of origin in Peru. The other registrations are PISCO, MAIZ BLANCO GIGANTE CUSCO, CHULUCANAS, PALLAR DE ICA, CAFE VILLARICA, LOCHE DELAMBAYEQUE, CAFE MACHU PICCHU-HUADQUIÑA, MACA JUNÍN-PASCO and ACEITUNA DE TACNA.
