The Supreme Council of the Judiciary has declared the suspension of judicial terms as from March 16th, 2020 and the cancellation of public hearings during the following week (until March 20th, 2020). According to the advances of the sanitary measures implemented by the government, the Supreme Council may extend the measure for an additional period.
The measure established exceptions for supervisory judges (juez de control de garantías) which must decide the legality of detentions made by the Police, and for judges who already scheduled public hearings with prisoner and people deprived of liberty. In those cases, although the suspension of judicial terms is not applicable, the hearing may take place virtually.
